Baritone Andrew Moran is a Senior Principal Artist with Opera Australia, having performed over 30 roles with the company. He is best remembered for his portrayals of Marcello (La Boheme), Sharpless (Madama Butterfly), Ping (Turandot), and Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), for which he has twice been nominated for a Green Room Award.
Born in Melbourne, Andrew holds a Bachelor of Music from Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, and a Graduate Diploma in Music from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
Since joining Opera Australia in 2006, Andrew has been a member of the Moffatt Oxenbould Young Artist Development Program, and subsequently has gone on to be employed as a full time Principal Artist. Since his debut as The Gamekeeper in Rusalka, he has performed over thirty roles for that company, and they include Bartolo (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Ned Keene (Peter Grimes), Geronio (Il Turco in Italia), Antonio (Le nozze di Figaro), the Mandarin (Turandot), Demetrius & Starveling (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Fra Melitone (La forza del destino), Morales (Carmen), Marullo (Rigoletto), Sciarrone (Tosca), Christian/Silvano (Un ballo in maschera), Amantio di Nicolao (Gianni Schicci), First Mate (Billy Budd), Yamadori & Imperial Commissioner (Madama Butterfly), Herald (Otello), Sid (La fanciulla del West), Mr Lindquist (A Little Night Music), Antonio (The Gondoliers), Fifth Jew (Salome), Johann (Werther), Alcindoro (La Boheme) and Messenger & Marquis d’Obigny (La traviata). In 2013, Andrew made his Wagnerian debut as Donner in Opera Australia’s first complete Ring Cycle.
Roles he has performed with other companies include Zurga (Les Pecheurs de Perles) and Morales with West Australian Opera, Pooh-Bah (The Mikado) with Opera Queensland, Marcellus (Hamlet) with Adelaide Festival, and Ping with Auckland Philharmonia. He also has extensive experience as a concert artist, performing in Bach’s St John Passion (Sydney Philharmonia),Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle (Perth Oratorio Choir), Mozart’s C minor Mass, the Requiems of Mozart, Faure, Michael Haydn and Durufle, Handel’s Messiah and Israel & Egypt, Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and A major Mass, and Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs (St George’s Cathedral Choir & Consort, Perth).
As well as Andrew’s experience as a recitalist (Schumann’s Dichterliebe and Poulenc’s Le bal masque) he is also the recipient of numerous awards, including the Italian Opera Award, the Phoebe Patrick Award, and the Glyndebourne Festival Prize.
In 2020 Andrew will reprise the role of Donner in Opera Australia’s new Brisbane production of The Ring Cycle. Andrew is delighted to be on the national tour of Bran Nue Dae, Australia’s first Indigenous musical.
